Session XXI - The Tournament Begins (2002-03-19)

Radagast spent the next week studying the necromancer's spellbook, copying almost every spell into his own spellbook. While Cassandra spent her time praying for a celestial mount (uselessly, so it seemed), Jobrick was working on encanting a guard officer's armor. Jobrick also got Radagast with him to the torchbearer's guild to do a little gambling and betting.

When Jobrick and Radagast were on their way back, they intercepted a bunch of thugs beating a giant man. It was a man they guessed was going to be participating in the archery contest, and rumor was he was pretty good. It was quite obvious the thugs were just trying to maim the man so Radagast cautioned Jobrik that they could heal the man afterwards so there was no to get killed needlessly. Jobrik's sonic blast quickly got guards to the scene, and the thugs retreated.

The adventurers explained what thyey had seen to the guards, and followed them as they dragged the unconscious ogre away. Later, they met his partner, a beautiful woman. Maya, as was her name, was very unwelcoming and wouldn't even ask Jobrik to heal the injured Thalgar even though Jobrik offered that. Jobrik left the offer standing in case they changed their mind.

Cassandra had also been busy, rounding up potential stable boys, or squires as she liked to call them. She finally picked one.

On the morning of the first day of tournament Jobrik got early visitors. It was Maya and Thalgar. Jobrik healed Thalgar's injured hand, and they paid for his services.

Jobrik also got another visitor, a man wearing a kilt. He explained that Maya and Thalgar had stolen something from him, an amulet called the Eye of Ares. Jobrik said he'd get the amulet to the righfull owner.

Radagast prepard for the achery contest by casting Mage Armor and Cat's Grace. Still, he did not do well. Maya and Thalgar dropped as well. The contest winner turned out to be Thorgal. Altragen Werebane won the crossbow contest.

In the ceremony to reward the winners Alayn had a surprise when the prize money (100 gold for winners) was not there. Maya was seen on the top of building, where she yelled about unfair competition and other ridiculous claims. Radagast aimed his bow at her and yelled her to surrender, but Maya just laughed saying she saw how bad a shot Radagast was. As he turned to leave, Radagast shot an arrow at her hitting her square on the back. Her armor must have reduced the hit somewhat, since she just run away and jumped onto a horse as soon as she came tumbling down from the roof. Thalgar had been waiting for her.

Jobrik cas fly spell on himself and flew after her, while Cassandra and Radagast run after her as fast as they could. Radagast borrowed a horse, mounting it neatly without even slowing down and galloped after her. Cassandra, the guards and a group of kilted men were trying to catch up on foot.

Jobrik and Radagast harassed the feeling thiefs, and by the time they squeezed through the closing city gates Thalgar was carrying Maya under her sholder, both riding on one horse. While Radagast was raining curses at the gate guards Jobrik finally stopped the feeling duo with a spell that grew a tangle of spiky growth all around them.

The thiefs were trapped well and good for long enough for everyone to position themselves around the fugitives. Once the spell ended, Maya gave up but Thalgar tried to make a move - which ended up being his last.

Cassandra grabbed the amulet, and although she could not detect evil in it refused to give it to the kilted barbarians, mumbling about old, evil, gods. It took all of Radagast's and Jobrik's cunning to finally have her give up the amulet (thus almost certainly avoiding a fight with the kilted men). Radagast and Jobrik ended up lying that the amulet was not magical. Radagast figured it held some kind of protective magic.

Once the money was returned to the winner of the archery contest, he gave 25 gold to both Jobrik and Radagast as thanks. Additionally Alayn gave 20 gold each to Alayn, Jobrik and Radagast.

Finally before heading for bed Jobrik cast the fly spell on Cassandra, who was extatic and flew in and around the castle, spooking fair folk who tried not to look under the skirt of the flying beauty. As she first took off in the corridors of Alayn's castle Radagast and Jobrik made a bet on how soon she would crash into a wall. Both of them were wrong, as Cassandra managed some tight turns without a problem. In the end she did meet with the stone wall though, but survived.
